Do Raccoons Come Out in the Rain?

Do Raccoons Come Out in the Rain? Raccoons tend to stay in the comforts of their dens while raining. They might go out to hunt for fish and other invertebrates afterward just like with any other animals.

Raccoon Activities

Their activities are dependent on the weather. They can hibernate when the temperature decreases. Texas raccoons are fine with a light drizzle. But when the rain is heavy, it will reduce the movements of a raccoon. When a mother raccoon is hungry, she will go out of its den even when the rain is pouring in order to feed her young.

Raccoons inside your Property

When the rain is heavy, raccoons can go inside your shed for temporary shelter. They can also climb your attics and go anywhere that is comfortable for them. They usually retire in a place where food is easily accessible to them. This can be a problem since raccoons can cause damage to the inside and the outside your house. They can go in your garbage cans and look for food scraps. They can also destroy vegetable beds, feed on fruit trees, create noises in the attic, damage electrical insulation and a lot more.

Typical Raccoon Behaviors

When a raccoon goes for hunting food while it is running, it is seriously hungry. Raccoons love to eat chicken eggs or even cat food. In rare cases, it can go into a fight with your cat. Cats do not pay attention to raccoons most of the time. However, if they felt threatened, your cat might be in big trouble. Raccoons are wild animals and they should be treated as such. As with other wild animals such as foxes and skunks, they are known to be rabies carriers. Not all of them though, but a study in 2013 found out that at least 30 percent are carriers of rabies. This should be high enough percentage. If your children come in close contact with a raccoon, they can be exposed to potential bites.

Raccoons during Rainy Weather

If a raccoon comes out of the rain, there is something that might have attracted their attention. It is very important to keep away any attractants inside your house. When you see a raccoon inside your attics or sheds during a rainy weather, you can lure them out by making them realize that there is available poultry. You can put the poultry outside of your fences and you should block any entrances afterward.

Raccoons in the wild rely heavily on rain in order to get food. They hunt for frogs, fishes, crickets, and worms after the rain. They are also resilient and can move around even when the temperature drops. They usually eat a lot during summer. However, they can’t stand the snow during winter months. Their movements are restricted in cold weathers and they may want to hibernate. If you encounter a raccoon, call someone who is capable of handling them. They can kill pets when they feel cornered. They are not normally dangerous but can be very destructive.
