How to get a dead animal out of your car
Your car smells unpleasant. It could be because of a dead animal that accidentally found its way in it. If you have already changed your ventilation system and air freshener doesn’t help, then it might be time to take some action. You might want to start looking for evidence that a rodent has found its way in your car.
Rodents like squirrels, mice, and rats are attracted to the warmth that your car engine provides. They can build nests during the fall and winter seasons inside your car. They can also chew on the wirings to keep their long teeth from growing.
Some of the signs of rodent infestation are chewed food, rats’ droppings that look like brown sunflower seeds, and damaged wirings. You might open the hood of your car and be hit with a stench of death. The poor animal might have decided to crawl in the small engine space and got electrocuted in the process. The scent of pine tree which you hang on your front mirror will not make the smell go away.
Find the Source of Smell
It might be difficult to find the source of the smell inside your car. Engines are composed of oddly shaped and packed machinery. It can be hard to track the corpse of the dead rodent when it is out of sight. If you were able to see the dead animal, use gloves to remove it.
If you are unsure of how to proceed with removing the engine, you can call your local service station. They can safely remove your car parts and remove the animal corpse for you.
Get rid of the smell
You have to work on the stink since it will not go away on its own. The bacteria are the source of the smell and they can remain even if the dead corpse is gone. Scrub the surface of your engine with a disinfectant and a bleach solution Air your car as much as possible.
It can be a problem if the animal died in your air filter. They like to rip up the filters and use the scraps to build their nest. However, the smell can disperse on the passenger’s area and you might have a hard time removing them. You might want to consider calling in a professional to remove the lingering odor. They can use saturated dry steam methods that can melt the bad smell away. They can use deodorizers as a second step and an antimicrobial treatment for the last one.
If the smell doesn’t go away to the point that you can’t even drive your car, then check with your insurance company if they can get you covered. They might be able to write off the vehicle as a total loss and get you a check. The fumes of a decomposing body are treated as a biohazard and it doesn’t pay to keep driving the car anymore if it smells.
